University was laid by the then Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi on 4 February 1984. The University recognized from the University Grants Commission. The University campus is very beautiful and large. Rajiv Gandhi University is the premier institution for higher education in the state of Arunachal Pradesh and has completed twenty five years of its existence. The University offered Under Graduate, Post Graduate, M.Phil and Ph.D. Courses in many various field. The University provides programmes in Commerce, Economics, Education, English, Geography, History, Political Science, Botany, Zoology and Hindi. The Department of Education also offers B.Ed. programmed.
The University was converted into a Central University with effect from 9th April 2007 as per notification of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
Sine inception, the University has made significant progress in teaching, research, innovations in curriculum development and developing infrastructure.
